First Step
Luke, in presenting the amendment at Wednesday’s hearing, explained that the Bowers are interested in building a ritle range on a 25-acre trace of land behind their Blue Ridge Gun business in Amissvillc. Since ranges aren't allowed in any zoning category, he said, the Bowers have proposed the ordinance amendment as the first step in setting up the legal mechanism for approval of a firing range.
The county's agricultural zoning category was selected for allowance of shooting ranges by special use permit because that category includes fiat lands under 14 percent slope. Luke continued. "A firing range required fiat ground."
Luke noted that if the ordinance amendment is adopted, applicants must comply with all the terms set out in the proposed amendment as well as any extra conditions set by the Board of Zoning Appeals.
