respect to what we would regard as the basic aspects of life, 1 see no change in three years: working and living conditions are the same—rock bottom poverty. But the income per person is rising steadily and on this commune, we were told the average has reached 420 yuan a year. The commune is shooting for 1,000. A yuan's value is about $1.60.
There were about 50 children in each simple classroom equiped only with a blackboard. After nursery school level, the children had larger quarters than 1 had seen previously in a city and some modern toys. The children were at tables in an orderly. controlled environment. There were two teachers for every ten pupils.
On previous visits to nursery schools, we were always given a show of the children acting and signing. This time I saw them interacting with their teachers in regular sessions. The littlest ones were being taught a song accompanied by a teacher beating a tambourine. We were told the teacher works to teach the average student but that both ha ndicapped and especially able students are helped on weekends and their parents are encouraged to work w ith them as well.
