I he nospuai naa an x-ray but all the facilities were of the simplest character. Mothers are allowed to stay with their sick children and 1 could see relatives of adult patients sitting beside them.
Consumer Goods
The noticable change in living conditions over the past three years is in the prevelance of consumer items. The home we visited has a transistor radio with a tape player. A TV stood prominently on a shelf and there was an electric fan in the ceiling and another on the table. Colorful pictures decorated the walls and there was a lamp in the shape of an elephant with a light bulb—appropriately small —extending from its trunk. Other figurines and traditional Chinese objects were behind glass in a case. There were several lights. Previously, 1 had seen provision for what appeared to be one 40-watt bulb. Not all households are as well provisioned as the one we saw.
TV is popular and radios can pick up Hong Kong broadcasts. There seems to be one Canton TV station used extensively for teaching English and math and showing entertaining social dramas of uplifting character. Hong Kong TV shows violent plays and Julia Child type Chinese cooking lessons.
The home we visited had a separate building for a kitchen—a place for perhaps four woks heated by wood or coal. A well was beside a modern basin attached to the wall with a drain located in the floor.
There is no way to convey the scene I am encountering in China; such a down-toearth existence everyone lives but the variety is staggering. 1 want to film everything to bring back the message of differences and astonishment where human labor is the basis for everything. Activity, instead of being boring or the same, is full of individuality.
