It’s difficult to answer seriously a bit of silliness like the Will Hoare letter on his missing rooms (June 17 News). But. since he tossed me the opportunity, I will.
His eight-room house, as represented on his property tax card on file with the Commissioner of Revenue, is wrong, says Hoare. It should read “12 rooms", to include the famous four, reportedly missing.
Eq. Board: take note. Four new rooms deserve your attention, surely. Equalize—and do right by Mr. Hoare.
The Hoare house is in good company. Lots of cards are missing structures quite visible to any visitor to those properties. One giant landowner is said to be missing over 100 tenant houses. The Moore farm "lost" its big white barn next to Fodderstack Road. I have personally reported assorted “missing" tenant house sites to the Eq. Board.
It is now their job to see that all of these are ‘‘found’’—and assessed. After all. we are constantly exhorted by the Eq. Board, not to mention the Supervisors, to bring such matters before them. All good citizens should respond like Mr. Hoare. I'm glad to see someone make an honest house out of the Hoare house.
In my guest column two weeks ago, I failed to mention one large detail about the Hoare house. Jerry Hall's initial assessment of $91,300 on this house didn't hold. The Eq. Board dropped it $20,000. No reason or basis given—just slash and drop. Come now, Eq. Board:
