When we arrived in Lanchow, west of Sian, in Kansu Province, on June 2, we were already in desert country, made productive by the waters of the Yellow River on which the city stands.
We flew into an airport more than an hour’s drive from the city to the west. I took it to be a military base since there were perhaps ten fighter planes on the ground. Lanchow stretches out a great distance in three somewhat lozenge-shaped developments, all of which we drove through to reach our hotel, requiring another hour.
