Institutionalized Hell
The things which did him in had nothing to do with party. philosophy, or potential for service. Those things were a part of the institutionalized hell a candidate must endure, these days if he or she wants to get elected.
The whole episode is a dismal commentary on our method of choosing public officials.
It raises the question of how many other men and women of sensitivity and pride, as well as of great potential for statesmanship, have chosen to stay out of public service rather than subject themselves to the ordeal Del. Grayson found himself going through.
If there are many of them—and 1 suspect there are—the tragedy goes far beyond Del. Grayson's unfortunate experience.
To be denied the potential for service of such people, except by the will of the voters, is a tragedy for both the Commonwealth and the country.
