Chester Gap Auction
The Chester Gap Volunteer Fire Department will sponsor a benefit auction on Friday evening, July 16, beginning at 6:30. All proceeds will benefit the fire department and the public is urged to support this event.
Free Conversation Classes
Beginning on Monday, July 19, free conversation classes in French and German will be held in the home of the Richard Bethune family in Front Royal.
French and German groups will meet separately for one hour beginning at 11 a.m.; the second hour from noon until 1 p.m. will be devoted to English conversation. Each group will be limited to ten participants with no age restrictions. Participants are asked to bring a bag lunch.
Weekly classes are planned with the possibility of expansion to twice weekly classes if there is sufficient interest.
Visiting the Bethunes for four weeks through the Association Europe exchange program are Ivan Bouchicot, Yvette France and Holger Klein of Wilnsdorf, Germany.

Special Services Meeting
Persons interested in services for those with special needs are invited to a meeting* scheduled by Tim Breedlove, mental retardation specialist with the Rappahannock Mental Health Clinic. Children *s Art Workshops
This summer Sursum Corda School in Washington is offering something special for the artistically inclined or gifted child. Kim Jacobson, local artist and Smithsonian Institution lecturer, is teaching three one-week Art Workshops. The first workshop was held the week of June 21-25. Children age 6 through 16 worked on a series of projects including sandcasting, self-portraits, spinning and dyeing and natural dye stuffs, tapestry making, and block prints. The next series will be held July 12 through 16 and will include mobiles, bookbinding, story illustration, stenciling, and wire motion sculptor. The final weekly series will be from August 16 through August 20. During this week children will complete a class mural, a multi-media collage, and stuffed objects. Each weekly session includes some printing, 3dimensional instruction, design principles, and different art elements. Classes are available for children age 6-9 and children age 10 and up.
