Uygur and their colorful dress and native customs dominate the scene. There is little to suggest new China except the millions of trees, the availibility of electricity and gasoline, something of a multi-occupational society and expanding agricultural production. Tremendous advances. We enjoy the local bazaar where fruit and vegetables are brought in on mule or donkey drawn carts. Artisans set up shop to mend shoes and other items. 1 watch a man making sifters or steamers of wood, nails and screening and buy one.
(Correction: The Canton commune mentioned in the first of Diana Bird's letters from China covered 68,000 mu, not miles. The mu is the Chinese acre. The fish residues which are used to fertilize the farmland of the commune supply between 70 and 80 percent of the fertilizer requirements, not 30 percent.)
