River makes it possible for wheat and vegetables to grow to feed a large population.
I'he wheat looked greener than any 1 have seen before, but that may be owing to the contrast of the vegetation and the buff colored surrounding bare mountains. My first thought was of the Nile, different because the river and the countryside over which we flew to reach Lanchow is a series of mountains which look like the Appalachians would were no vegetation growing on them.
The interests of Lanchow for us proved to be two: a commune we visited growing vegetables and fruit and the provincial museum. The commune's leader for the last twenty six years gave us a briefing that was equal to, if not superior to any other we have had.
