We are now at Turfan, days away by train from Dunhuang and we have in the meantime traversed the I Black Gobi, an incredible waste of black stones, large and small, covering the hills, when there are some, or the vast level plain stretching as far as the eye< can see in all directions. Suddenly, we come upon stark ruins of an ' extensive settlement, destroyed two centuries ago by an overwhelming sand storm. Later we see broken stretches of the wall with towers here and there, marching across the landscape - remnants of the Han ' dyansty. B.C. 206-220 A.D.
