After Lanchow, we stopped, at the end of a train journey though the Gobi Desert, at Jiuganquan to visit a large clay brick fortress. This was the last pass and the end of the Chinese wall during the Ching dynasty, China’s last - 1644-1911. (Later we saw remnants of a further Chin Dyansty wall 221-206 A.D.) The fortress was situated between two mountain ranges which the wall spanned. Attractive features of this double-walled compound were two beautiful pavilions erected on the tops of the high walls, delicate contrasts to the plasteredover mud brick walls. To see this and the many other walls erected and maintained over thousands of years is to begin to understand the Maginot Linementality of the Chinese. One is puzzled because the desert wastes across wfcjph the walls and fortifications were constructed seem more formidable than the defenses themselves. When 1 suggested that walls were perhaps not so much designed to keep people out as to control traffic, I was told definitely not.
