The Washington Town Council adopted a dog ordinance last month that prohibits dog owners from letting their dogs roam freely through town. Dog owners either have to keep their dogs on their property or walk them on a leash in town. Dogs found roaming in town will be picked up by the county animal warden when a county animal facility has been built.
A few dog owners who were reached for comment all agreed with the principle behind the ordinance. “I Understand that there are people who are afraid of dogs that run loose, and the council has the right to regulate that,” said Nance Reeve, who works in town and whose dog comes with her every day. “It personally saddens me because one of the appealing things about country living and country villages to me is seeing the dogs out and about.”
Reeve said that she will abide by the ordinance when it becomes enforceable by tying her dog either at her home or at the office. “If I felt anyone was afraid of my dog now, I would tie him up immediately,” Reeve said. “I would want to know if anyone is afraid of him.”
Truman Keesey, a town resident who owns a dog, said that he already abides by the ordinance most of the time. “I only let her run free at certain times, but most of the time I keep her on a leash,” Keesey said. “My dog is very friendly, and she wants to bounce around people in a friendly way that
