Moat students of the Bible understand that the next event on God’s “prophetic calendar” is the Rapture of the Church. This terminology refers to the first phase of Christ’s second coming. In the Rapture, Christ comes not to establish His earthly kingdom (that comes later), bur rather to take out of the world all who believe in Him (the saints). Also at this same time the bodies of previously departed saints (believers who have “died”) will be restored and reunited with their respective spirits which had gone to be with Christ at the time of their “death.” This is not a new or innovative idea. It has been the subject of more articles and books than any other prophetic subject in the Bible. It is commonly referred to as the “blessed hope” of the Church.
The major biblical descrption of this is in I Thessalonians 4:13-18. In this passage, the Holy Spirit caused Paul to use an unusual terminology. He refers to believers who have gone through the experience we commonly call death as being “asleep.” The word in the original language is a form of the word koimao, and various forms of it occur only 19 times in the New Testament.
