Rain and high winds blasted through the county last Thursday, leaving uprooted trees and bams, a power outage, one broken hip, and gardens that looked like tossed salads. In the span of about 20 minutes, winds raged in excess of 50 mph and buckets of rain drenched the county.
Amid rumors of tornado sightings, the National Weather Service confirmed that a tornado touched down in Greene County, destroying several homes. The weather service would not confirm reports by residents of Rappahannock County that a tornado passed through this area.
After the storm quieted, there was abundant evidence that violent winds, if not a tornado, had jolted the county. Rick and Sherry Johnson of Woodville were away from their home during the storm. When they returned, they found that their storage bam had been demolished. One of four walls was left standing.
Bill Harrison of Sperryville received the only reported injury. He broke his hip and the bone around his right eye. He was on his roof repairing an antenna when the storm hit, according to his wife Jeanne. She said the
