The planning commission is in the early stages of work on a new town comprehensive plan, which the planners will complete before beginning work on a new zoning ordinance. The town BZA, when appointed, will apply the town’s comprehensive plan and zoning ordinance to any special use permit applications or variance requests.

Concern over the changes has been expressed along with relief that the town will be protected from unwanted development. Qqfcjown official said that it would have been better if elected officials could have handled the additional duties of a planning commission and BZA since appointed officials cannot be held accountable in a direct way by voters.

“More boards and committees work fine in a large area, but we have 238 people,” the official said. “There will be more participation from different people, though, and if people have a job to do, they take more of an interest in what’s going on.”

Town council member Evelyn Willis said that finding enough people in town who are willing and have the time to accept an appointment to one of the boards may prove to be difficult. “I think that the changes are good, though, since more people will be involved as long as the boards work in a low-key way and they don’t become inefficient,” Willis said. “I would like to see more townspeople involved with town government.”
