where from six to 15 calls come in each week from people wanting rental housing. Some of those people live outside the county, and they are usually the ones who get the houses because they can afford to rent them, according to Atkins.
“I just rented a three-bedroom house to an attorney who will use it on weekends,” said Atkins. The rent will be in the neighborhood of $600 to $800 a month. Atkins said the average person living in the county who is looking for a two to three-bedroom house can pay only $200 to $300 a month.
In the battle for rental housing in Rappahannock County, it is usually the “outsider” who prevails. The problem, noted Atkins, is that in the last five years rental prices have “at least doubled.” She said the steep increase in prices was predictable, given the rising demand for rental housing. “The other problem is that there is just not enough housing available.”
“Many formerly available rental houses have been sold, and the new owners won’t rent them,” Atkins said,
