No one would allow a hatchet job.
It seems appropriate, in a county of this size, to have one central library. Does the county really need two library buildings? Probably not. An expansion to the existing building could take care of the space problem.
Rather than let the present building become a museum piece, why not make it functional so people can enjoy it all the more? We don’t think it should fade into retirement.
There has been concern about what to do with the gift of land deeded to the Friends of the Library by Byrd Jones. If a library building is not built on that land within 10 years after the death of the present tenant, then the land passes to the Northern Virginia Education Center. That clause in the deed has persuaded some people to think that all efforts pertaining to the library should be directed toward the construction of a new building. There is a sense of urgency about building within the allotted 10 years.
Maybe, though, the county does not need another library building. It may not be wise to construct a new building just because land has been made available.
