RICHMOND — State Sen. L. Douglas Wilder will climb into a borrowed station wagon in southwest Virginia this week to begin an arduous and unprecedented campaign trip in his Democratic race for lieutenant governor.
“It will be exhausting but it will be worth it to have the opportunity to see and hear from the people of Virginia,” the 54-year-old Richmond legislator said.
In a 60-day motor trip that will cover more than 3,400 miles, Mr. Wilder will visit every Virginia county and some 320 towns, some so tiny they aren’t even on the map.
“If there’s no more than a gas station and a couple of houses, I’ll be there,” he said. “I don’t know of any candidate who has ever done this before.”
Some have said Mr. Wilder is hitting the road Thursday because his campaign resources are too slim to enable him to reach the people through costly media advertising.
Others have said Mr. Wilder’s trip is necessary to convince voters that he is a black whose record and experience in government qualifies him for statewide office.
Mr. Wilder played down the importance of either motive but gave some credence to both.
“If I had a million dollars, it wouldn’t change what I’m doing. But the fact that campaign contributions have been less than I had anticipated heightens my resolve to take my campaign to the people,” he said.
