uture care planning, surrogate support and personal advocacy services will soon be available to families with handicapped dependents in Virginia’s Northern Shenandoah Valley region, it has been announced by the Planned Lifetime Assistance Network (PLAN).
The PLAN organization is currently assisting families in Northern Virginia (Falls Church) and Central Virginia (Charlottesville) with the development of plans by which the resources of families with handicapped dependents may be effectively utilized to provide for the future care of the disabled individuals after the parents’ death. The plan, known as “Personal Care Plan” is developed with personal counseling, direction and planning during the parents’ life.
At a recent meeting of PLAN’S statewide board of directors in Charlottesville, the creation of the Northern Shenandoah Valley Regional Council was approved. The region consists of the counties of Clarke, Frederick, Warren, Page, Shenandoah and Rappahannock as well as cities located within these geographic regions. Funding to initiate the office has been provided by the Knights of Virginia Assistance for the Retarded (KOVAR), which recently’$tesert ted a $10,000 grant for this purpose.
In conjunction with the initiation of the office, a regional council governing board has been started and includes Steve Nikolajevic of Castleton as council chairman; Griffin Davis, Susan Dawkins and Ray Radke, all of Winchester; and Nancy Thompson of Berryville, Mr. Nikolajevic and Mr. Davis are parents of handicapped dependents, while Ms. Dawkins and Mr. Radke are health care professionals. Ms. Thompson is a Clarke County extension agent. Additional members will be added to1 the board and anyone interested in participating in the council should contact Mr. Davis at (703) 667-3130.
