Wakefield School’s basketball teams have stepped up their momentum as the varsity and junior varsity teams have talked five consecutive wins between them in their most recent games. This moved both teams to a 2-0 standing and a first place tie with Seton School in the Delaney Athletic Conference.
Wakefield hosted Emmanuel School at home for back-to-back varsity and junior varsity games. The junior varsity team defeated Emmanuel 49-10. Carey Maar of Front Royal led in scoring with 12 points and Sean Miller of Woodstock, Jerry McDowell of Warrenton and Michael King of Midland followed with 10, 8 and 7 points respectively.
“We were hot; they were cold. What more can you say?” commented Coach Gary Leake. “We dominated the rebounding part of the game and the majority of our points came off of the fast breaks. Our experience won out over a young team.”
The varsity team went on to a resounding 69-30 victory over Emmanuel. David Rowzie of Amissville led the squad with 13 points. Eddie Ferguson of Huntly and Nick Longerbeam of Berryville each scored 10 points and Louis Poore of Washington earned eight points for his team. Coach Leake attributed the team’s 25 takeaways which “led to easy shots” as an important factor in the
