County Administrator John McCarthy said the county might be interested in working with the park service on scenic easements. “We have a situation where the county is trying to protect our mountainsides,” he said. He said that the county is concerned about using the concept of the original boundaries of the park, however, since the village of Sperryville is within those boundaries. “We feel like a rural village is not contradictory with the goals of the park,” he said. “We’re proud of what we’ve done and where we’re going.”
Following the meeting Mr. Estes said he would not like to see the park acquire any more land in Rappahannock. Supervisor Chairman Hubert Gilkey agreed, saying the payment the county receives from the Federal government is considerably less than the real estate taxes on the property would be.
Mr. Estes also pointed out that most of the jobs in the northern part of the park seem to be going to Page County, rather than Rappahannock County, residents.
