Lou Ada Maphis, 83, of Hillcrest Manor Nursing Home died Nov. 6 at the home.

A graveside service was held Nov. 8 in Shenandoah Memorial Park with the Rev. Anthony Wadsworth officiating.

Mrs. Maphis was bom Jan. 20, 1907, in Washington, the daughter of the late John B. and Ada Horton Cloud. She was a member of the Baptist Church and married to the late Clyde F.E. Maphis.

Surviving are one daughter, Betty Lou Gray of Winchester; one step-son, Eugene Maphis of Winchester; two grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

John Guthrie

John Julius Guthrie, 70, a retired graphic artist who had operated the John Guthrie Studio in Washington, D.C. for 31 years until he retired in 1981, died Nov. 7 at Culpeper Memorial Hospital after a heart attack. He lived in Castleton.

Mr. Guthrie was bom in Portsmouth, VA, the son of Joseph Alfred Guthrie, Surgeon, USN, and Edith Raymond Guthrie.

During World War II, he enlisted in the Army , and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Army’s last horse cavalry unit. He served in the China-Burma-India theater, where his military decorations included the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.

He was a member of the Art Directors Club, The Touchdown Club, the Little Fork Rangers of Sons of Confederate Veterans, and the Sons of the American Revolution. He was a board member of the Confederate Memorial Association in Washington, D.C.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Helen; two daughters, Teresa G. Slover of Washington and Edith R. Guthrie of Amissville; two sons, Joseph Alfred of DeLand, Fla. and John Julius, Jr: of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; a sister, Louisa Guthrie Roach of Vienna and six grandchildren.

Mr. Guthrie was buried on Nov. 9 at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors.

George S. Davis

George Stoner Davis, 67, of Front Royal died Nov. 6 in Royal Haven Rest Home.

A graveside service was held Nov. 9 in Prospect Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Darrell Bare officiating.
