County road
budget faces
25% reduction

Resident Engineer Robert Moore told the Board of Supervisors last week that costs of repairing the county’s roads from last month’s storm damage combined with cutbacks in state funds because of the tight money situation at the state level will reduce his budget for upgrading, repairing and maintaining the county’s secondary roads by more than 25 percent.
The Virginia Department of Transportation official said that repair work on storm damage is 80 percent complete, and that he estimated the whole job would cost $175,000, with about $90,000 spent so far.
A bridge on Route 614 in Gid Brown Hollow still has to be replaced and one on Route 681 in Jenkins Hollow that had its abutments washed out may need replacement. “It was poor timing,” he said, since his maintenance budget already had been reduced by $25,000.
He said that he had requested additional fbnding from the state because of the emergency nature of the repairs, but as of press time he had not heard if more money would be forthcoming.
