On election night as Congressman Stan Parris fell and Congress- man Herb Bateman barely hung on to win, some Republicans were already preparing a new effort to oust Don Huffman as state partv chairman.
Just a few days later U.S. Sen. John Warner suggested that Mary Vaughan Gibson of Chesterfield be named new chairman, should Huffman resign, while Congressman Thomas J. Bliley of Richmond, easily re-elected to the U.S. House, sent a clear signal he would be interested in the job.
Meanwhile, trial balloons were being floated in various quarters for other prospective candidates to help rebuild the prospects of the sagging r party, among them state Sen. John r H. Chichester of Fredericksburg r and attorney D. French Slaughter III, a former Charlottesville party chairman and the son of Seventh District Congressman D. French Slaughter Jr. of Culpeper.
