The Rappahannock School Board unanimously adopted a resolution Tuesday evening committing the board to replacing the sewage lagoon at the elementary school, probably with a “package treatment plant.”
The 'resolution was necessary, School Superintendent David Gangel explained because the board cannot get a building permit to begin construction on the addition without a statement from the Department or Department of Environmental Quality that will allow the new addition to be hooked up to the existing sewer lines.
Dr. Gangel said that the lagoon cannot be made to meet requirements for ammonia levels. Last summer when the school system received a permit for the lagoon to continue operating DEQ said the system would have to meet ammonia requirements by August 1977. With the commitment to upgrade thd sewage system by 1977, DEQ will allow the school system to include the addition with the existing sewage system on a temporary basis.
‘Dr. Gangel said that he had been told a “package sewage treatment plant” will cost about $200,000.
