Over the years, The Middle St. Gallery has earned a reputation for giving unknown, emerging and established artists an opportunity to show their work in a professional setting.
January’s show at the gallery well reflects this blending of abilities with it’s new members exhibition. The viewer will find an eclectic mix of the famous cartoonist Jeff MacNelly; professional jewelry make Ellen FairchildFlvgel; woodworker and clock creator Stephen Ladrew; exceptional painters Mary Sturcken and Dieter Schellinger plus a host of others.
In the sphere of painting Ms. ' Sturcken and Dr. Schellinger are the stars of the show. At the festive show opening last Sifhday, I was disappointed at not* seeing Ms. Sturcken present. Her paintings intriqued me so much that I was full of questions to ask the artist. The Flutist a lushly and vigorously pafftted nude is exceptional. The model is reclining on a green sofa surrounded by touches of lively red. It is mastorfully painted and the glowing life of the model is brilliantly portrayed in bold color and strong light and shadow. “Marriage Made drr Heaven, a very intimate and joyous painting of a couple moving around the huge canvas in a dance sequence is a novel approach to recording time, space and motion on a flat, static surface.
