In the past board members have been reluctant to adopt a policy banning smoking for employees. Hampton District representative Bryant Lee said, “I’ve had several people contact me who are employees...They’re asking for a place outside the building.”
Dr. Gangel said that he feels school employees, particularly teachers are roll models for students. He added, “I don’t have as strong a feeling about outside smoking.”
Wakefield District representative Paul Nichols agreed with Mr. Lee. He said that teachers don’t want to smoke in front of the kids, but would like a place outside that is somewhat protected from the weather. He said it would be impossible to enforce a ban on smoking on ' school grounds during school hours on contractors working on the addition.
StonewaihHawthom District representative John Tole agreed that a total ban on smoking would be “unenforceable.” He recommended some provision to allow employees to smoke outside. •
“I agree,” said Frances Thornton, representative from Piedmond District.
Dr. Gangel agreed to come back next month with a proposal to ban smoking inside the building but provide a place for employees to smoke outside.
