At the high school volleyball game Monday there was a lot of grumbling because the teams had not been allowed to practice while school was closed for snow. The opponents from Falls Church had missed few if any practices.
The girls and their coach had been prepared to practice, but School Superintendent David Gangel would not allow it.
“When school is closed, it is closed,” he said in a telephone interview Tuesday. He said instruction is the most important thing that goes on in school. “If it is bad enough to close for instruction, it’s bad enough to close for everything else.” He said that scheduling practices would encourage students to drive on roads that may not be safe.
He said that there may be exceptions when school is closed because it is snowing in the morning, but then the sun drives up the roads, but that situation would be unusual. “It’s a judgement call,” he said.
Most of the games missed last week have been rescheduled.
The junior panther home game against Page County will be played January 14. The volleyball games against Manasas Park missed last Thursday are rescheduled for February 9. The away varsity and junior varsity basketball games missed with Stonewall Jackson last Tuesday and Strasburg last Friday are rescheduled for February 2 and 17.
