The board toured the kindergarten classrooms ahd heard a presentation on the new kindergarten curriculum. The kindergarten teachers said they had worked on the curriculum over the summer trying to make it “developmentally appropriate” for the young children.
The kindergarten rooms are arranged in centers that the children can choose. There are various activities provided at the centers. The kindergarten teachers said they feel the children are responding well to the new curriculum.
The board also heard a presentation by Assistant Superintendent Robert Chappell on “Tech Prep.” Dr. Chappell said that he is working with people from Lord Fairfax Community College and from other school systems that are served by the community college to develop a high school curriculum that will ensure that students not preparing for a four-year college education are prepared for work. He said the “Tech Prep” curriculum would be for those students who are in between college-bound students and those taking a vocational course in high school.
Dr. Chappell said national statistics show that about 50 percent of high school students do not attend college and are not prepared for work. He said that the percentage in Rappahannock is less that half of that.
