Ms. Owens has been helping out the Leakes for almost four years. “It is good that Mrs. Leake can get help so they can continue to live here,” she said.
There are several other eldeisly people besides the Corbins and Leakes who need help to stay in their homes, said Nancy Reeve, adult service worker for the Department of Social Services. The department employs in-home care providers for the Leakes, Corbins, and others. She said there are four people on a waiting list right now.
According to Mrs. Reeve, the over-85 age group is the fastest growing population in the United States. More and more residents of this county are falling into that category, and most prefer to continue living at home rather than moving to a nursing home.
Community Action for Relief of the Elderly (CARE), is helping people to maintain their independence and remain in their own homes. Funds in the past have been provided by the State of Virginia, and some still are, but the funds have been cut to the point where they run out way before the year is over, Mrs. Reeve said. (
