Since 1989, VCE and VAES have received many cutbacks and have trimmed any excess that there may have been. Many of the county agents were moved in an effort to keep the 107 county units functioning in light of these cuts. The total loss of funds from 1989 until this year was over S12 million, and 280 postions have been cut. Many of the positions that had people retire from will not be filled.
This is indeed a very bleak picture if the funds are not totally restored to VCE and VAES. I fear that there will not be a 4-H program as we now know it. I worry that the county offices will be closed and there will only be regional Extension offices. 1 shudder to think of where the agricultural industry will be in the future without research to keep us on the .leading edge. What will happen to the environment without research and guidance?
So, what do we do? We must take action. Call or write to your representatives. Tell them that we can not do without VCE and the VAES. Explain to them the importance of these two organizations to you and that any reductions will start to destroy what is left. Ninty percent of Extension’s funds go into salaries, we have eliminated the waste.
I implore each and all who have ever benefited from the services of these ogranizations to take a few moments and stand up and b£ counted. Let our delegated know what VCE and the VAES mean to the citizens Who have elected them to represent us!
