To the Editor:
Why did you kill that cow? Why did you kill that chicken? Do you ask that question every time you sit down to eat a meal and one of these items are on your plate?
It makes me wonder why anyone in Rappahannock County would ask the question, as so many have in the letters of the jaast few weeks. “Why did you kill that bear?” Need I answer that question? Maybe I should—to eat! And why string it up by the neck? Have you ever seen anyone skin a deer or cow while it lies on the ground?
Before so many liberal city-slickers moved into Rappahannock County no one would have ever-asked that question. Bear are not rare or uncommon in the wild of Rappahannock County. They only seem so because they stay so well hidden. From time to time Rappahannock County has had bear removed because they are so over populated fm parts of the county and have been a nuisance destroying property. And if you’ve never seen one and wonder why, as a rule they don't come moseying into your yard to munch on grass.
Bear are much more skittish and, don't close unless there is a shortage of food. My father is a hunter and has seen as many as 20 in one season.
If vou'd shop for your meat in the woods instead of the grocery store, you might see a bear from time to time.
