The future of this organization is in grave danger.
The proposed Executive Budget for 1995-96 has cut the Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE) and the Virgin!!"' Agricultural Experiment Station (VAES) by 30 percent of General Fund Appropriations.
One out of four youth in our state belong to 4-H, a part of VCE, making this the largest youth organization in the state. Through the 4-H program, more than 118,000 youth and 8,800 adult volunteers participate in the wide variety of programs offered.
I dare to say that former 4-Hers are not the ones that are crowding our jails. This program instills values, responsibility, citizenship and leadership, qualities that enable the 4-H members to grow into productive and useful parts of their communities.
The Home Economics programs started with the Home Demonstration Clubs and has expanded to lpffering training and
education ir| areas of nutrition, financial management and family life. Many of ihe programs offered by other service and social agencies have irseavthe material and training ofwCE.
As the number of production agriculturalists in the state as well as the country decline, we have to justify our need for the research and assistance that VCE and the VAES provide.
