County landowners and car owners will be paying higher taxes this year to fund a special levy for the fire and rescue squads.
The Board of Supervisors voted 3 to 2 to adopt a three-cent fire levy on fair market value of real estate and a 20 cent increase to the personal property tax on motor vehicles to support the Fire and Rescue Association’s request for $275,000 to pick up the operating costs of the seven squads in addition to the county’s current support for insurance and some capital costs.
Additionally the supervisors cut the budget by $28,000 and held the regular real estate tax rate at the current 69 cents per hundred.
