The Washington Town Council agreed to set up a committee to look into the town’s future, particularly looking at issues of parking and sewer service, but also studying how to keep businesses and residents in the town.
Council member Ray Gooch suggested that the agenda for last Wednesday’s meeting include a discussion of letters exchanged between Mayor Stewart Willis and the vestry and rector of Trinity Episcopal Church.
Last January the mayor wrote to the vestry of the church expressing his willingness to work to help keep the church in town. In his letter Mayor Willis said he was writing about keeping the church for its architectural importance in the center of towTi.
In April Jennings W-. Hobson III as rector and Michael Mahoney as senior warden for the vestry wrote back. They noted that an architectural study showed that it would be possible to expand on the current site but that there are barriers to such expansion.
As a minimum the letter notes that the church would have to have a waiver from the town’s parking regulations, but it adds concern with parking goes beyond that and suggests a committee of residents and businesses in town to try to find a solution.
The letter goes on to say the church, like residents and businesses in town, is concerned about sewer service. The letter notes the town has a committee looking into the issue of sewer and asks about a time frame for a report from that committee.
