Elizabeth “Libby” Whetzel said she is running for the School Board from Hampton District because she wants to bring the board the point of view of a former teacher.
She taught for 20 years in the Montgomery County, Md.„ public schools teaching primary grades in traditional classrooms and also team teaching with another teacher and two grades in a class.
“This is the first opportunity to have an elected School Board,” she said. “I felt this was something I was qualified to do. 1 could give the teacher’s viewpoint....I’m not doing this to be political. I have no interest in any other political office.”
She has been a member of the local literacy volunteers since the group was formed in 1985, and she said that has convinced her of the importance of getting students to stay in school and graduate.
She said that there have been 74 students who have attempted to get their GED certificates through the literacy program, and only 14 have succeeded. “You can’t make up going to classes every day for two or three years in a few months,” she said. “Most people don’t realize
