She is also concerned with behavior in classrooms today. “I was teaching when integration came along,” she said. “That did not cause the downfall of peace in the classroom. That came from a bunch of educationalists.”
Mrs. Whetzel and her daughter Phyllis Poore live on a 190-acre farm Mrs. Whetzel and her husband purchased in 1979. Mrs. Poore runs Ash Tree Stables. She boards horses and gives lessons in riding. Mrs. Whetzel and her husband built their house on the farm, and Mrs. Poore lives in a separate house. Widowed for nine years, Mrs. Whetzel said she has a peach orchard that is getting smaller every year, and she will cut back on the large garden she had last year.
Her daughters attended public school in Montgomery County. Her grandchildren also attended public schools, and now her great grandchildren are in public schools in Maryland.
She has a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from the University of Maryland and
