Katie Lynn, a 1995 graduate of the College of Notre Dame of Maryland, was recently awarded a Fulbright Grant to study in Italy.
A former studio art major, Miss Lynn will study sculpture at private studios in Pietrasanta, Italy, beginning in October of this year.
Pietrasanta, “the cradle of sculpture,” is located in northern Tuscany in central Italy. One mile from the Mediterranean Sea, it is at the foot of the marble Apuan Alps mountains.
Michelangelo frequently stayed in the Pietrasanta area to personally supervise the quarrying of his stone for great sculptures such as “David” and “Pieta.”
Other famous artists such as Donatello also stayed in this area which has remained the center of the sculpture world. Since Miss Lynn’s focus is on figure sculpture, specializing in religious icons, she hopes that working in the heady environment of
