He said he is also concerned about the cost of the schools. “1 do not believe it takes a great deal of money to get a great education,” he said.” I’m going to be committed to keeping costs to a minimum and spending money only where we can achieve a definite change in our profile as the result of a dollar spent.”
He said the addition to the high school produced a gym, an auditorium and an improved cafeteria but only three additional classrooms. “I did not see a big change for the better in education,” he said. “I saw a better sports place and a better eating place. I did not see a change in education.”
He said he would favor offering vocational education locally if it can save money or not cost more than Piedmont because of time saved in the bus ride.
“I’m for vocational education,” he said. “It’s the future for many of the kids in our schools, and it’s turned out to be my future as a furniture maker.”
He is a member of the school board at St. Luke’s and said that has prepared him for the kinds of issues he would face as a member of the local board.
He said he realizes there are federal and state regulations that may make change in the schools difficult. “I’m going to stand up for what the community believes,” he said. “You have to look at what’s best for all the students, not what’s best for an individual.”
