There are changes in store for the elementary school, but they are not as dramatic as the switch to block sched-^ uling at the high school.
At the top of the list at RCES is the new reading series. Principal Raye Tuppcr and assistant principal Richard Smith say with the adoption they are switching back to using basal readers after several years of whole language instruction.
Mrs. Tupper said they want to keep the best parts of whole language, ’the emphasis on integrating the language arts, especially reading and writing, and the emphasis on having the students read good literature, but they also want a more systematic approach to teaching reading with more “structure .and continuity” from grade to grade.
Mr. Smith said there will be more emphasis on teaching particular reading. skills. The new series includes “good children’s literature” with a thematic approach.
