Mr. Smith said in the writing test the students are given a “prompt” such as “My favorite season is...” The particular prompt is kept secret until the test is given. The sixth graders are expected to write a paper on that topic. The area receiving the most emphasis is “composition, developing a main idea and sticking to it, writing that makes sense.” The secondary emphasis in scoring the test is on the writers style. Scorers are looking for a sense of the writer’s personality and choice^ of vocabulary, he said. Other areas are grammar, sentence structure, punctuation, capitalization and spelling, but these do not count for as much when the paper is graded as composition and style.
