High school sports practices got underway this week as girls came out for varsity and junior varsity basketball teams, both boys and girls came out for cross country teams and cheerleaders started practice.

There were 18 girls out for JV basketball and eight for varsity, but both varsity Coach Laura Conklin and JV Coach Rhonda Jenkins said they knew of more girls who would be coming out.

The first day was given over to physical conditioning, and a presentation by a salesman on shoes available. Coach Conklin said the girls did not have to buy any shoes, but they were available.

Down the hall cross country runners were also learning about shoes. There were six girls and 15 boys on the first day. Coach David Van de Graaff said this team had the most potential of any team that had ever come out and predicted success if the students were willing to stick to the program.

He said there would be Saturday invitational meets, and that immediately presented a problem for two students who are committed to play this fall for select soccer teams. Coach Van de Graaff said he would have no problem
