It is obvious there is widespread concern about the scores Rappahannock sixth graders earned on the state’s Literacy Passport Tests.
At Tuesday night’s School Board meeting Superintendent David Gangel suggested the School Board adopt a goal of having 80 percent pass all three tests this year.
He suggested plans were in the works to make improvements and promised to bring a presentation to the next meeting on what is being done.
He said he would “guarantee” that scores will be higher this year.
Jackson District representative on the Board of Supervisors Ron Frazier was on hand to say he had recommended a year ago that the school system drop its whole language approach to teaching reading and instead adopt a phonics-based approach.
In fact, the elementary school is dropping its emphasis on whole language in part and returning to “basal” readers. That is not the same thing. Principal Raye Tupper said the school had never dropped phonics but had included it with whole language and will include it with the basal series of readers.
