Winchester, was a very young man when Churchill came to visit, but has vivid memories of the experience.
He recalls that Churchill told his father that he felt his political career was behind him. He had been a member of Parliament for 28 years and had served in the cabinets of three prime ministers. He was of royal lineage and a controversial figure, particularly while serving as First Lord of the Admiralty during World War I.
Harry Byrd Jr. says that Churchill’s long visit was an unforgettable experience. Years later Byrd recalled in an article he wrote that, “His tenacity was apparent during his Virginia visit.” On his first night there, Governor and Mrs. Byrd entertained the statesman and while eating roast beef, Churchill asked for mustard. Mrs. Byrd relayed word to the kitchen but was told there was no mustard available.
