one page with three or four paragraphs, Mr. Smith said.

As in the reading and mathematics parts of the Literacy Passport the children are allowed to tkke as much time as they want, Mr. Smith said, but most will quit at the end of an hour to one and a half hours.

In an effort to improve the teaching of mathematics, teachers representing each grade worked on developing a mathematics curriculum over the summer. “The curriculum pulls all the standards together,” and breaks the Standards of Learning into separate teaching objectives, Mrs. Tupper said.

Also now each classroom has at least one good computer and there are also two fully equipped computer labs.

Mrs. Tupper said she is concerned that one reason students haVe not been doing as well on standardized tests and the Literacy Passport tests is that federal funding for remedial instruction has been cut back and staffing has been cut back along with that.

She said the federal remedial tnath program will be cut back to just grades five through seven after years in which all grades were eligible. She will be asking for volunteers to help some of the students who will -not have the formal remediation.
