Among the 58 local votes cast for presidential candidates other than Dole; Clinton and Perot, the Libertarian Party candidate Harry Browne had 35 votes, two each from Chester Gap and Amissville, seven each from Washington andl Sperryvi He, nine from Flint Hill and eight from Scrabble. Natural Layi Party candidate John Hagelin was next with 14 votes, one each in Chester Gap and Washington, seven in Sperryville and five in Scrabble Virginia Taxpayers Party candidate Howard Phillips had nine votes, V/i’6 each in Chester Gap and Flint Hill? one each in Sperryville and Amissville and three in Washington. '

President Clinton did better in the county than he did four years ago when he garnered only 40.2 percent of the vote. However, Bob Dole also did better than former President George Bush did in that election. In 1992, Bush got 44.5 percent of the vote. This pick up for both the Republican and Democratic party candidates came at . the expense of Ross Perot whose share of the vote dropped from 15.3 percent in 1992 to less than 7 percent in 19%.

Four of the five amendments to the Virginia Constitution passed easily in the county, but the fifth, which would have allowed churches and other religious organizations "to incorporate, failed. This result seems to have been typical of the state as a whole. «
