.Now and then I hear from Hopeful Writer: "I’m enclosing the first three chapters of my novel. Would you read them and give me a few tips? And could you direct me to a good agent?"
To which I reply that I have never even met a literary agent, that the art of writing fiction is an art that eludes me, and that I wish the author good luck in finding a publisher. Cordially yours.
Instead of that unhelpful response, I recently have discovered a better reply: "Read the novels of F. Scott Fitzgerald," I should say to an aspiring writer, "and profit from his example."
The centennial anniversary of Fitzgerald's birth fell on Sept. 24. Marking the occasion, Scribner's republished four of Fitzgerald's five novels. I ordered the set and dived at once into "The Great Gatsby." Then came "This Side of Paradise," followed by "Tender Is the Night." Fitzgerald's unfinished "The Last Tycoon" is at hand, and soon I will catch up with "The Beautiful and Damned."
