area for the tea party. Carolyn Emerick made four dozen of. her well-liked chocolate chip cookies while artist Tanya Richey poured tea from an antique silver tea set. Karen Flynn helped serve miniature raspberry tarts and other baked goods to the diplomats. It was that kind of day — with the Chinese diplomats meeting local residents and enjoying the hospitality Rappahannock has to offer. After arriving at Mr. Campbell's 20-acre Civil War farm, the Chinese delegation lunched on local produce provided by the U.S. guests and homemade dumplings made by the chef from the Chinese Embassy. The Americans explained to their Chinese guests the meaning of the Halloween holiday and together the group divided into joint U.S.-Chinese teams to have a pumpkin carving contest.
Dr. William Young, who is a friend of Mr. Campbell's, was the judge of the contest. There were awards of Halloween candy for the winners. Lorraine Espinola and her children provided a musical perf ormance for the guests. Afterwards, the U.S.-Chinese delegation went apple picking at a local orchard, and when they arrived at the Middleton Inn, the U.S. officials showed their Chinese guests how to feed apples to the inn's horses.
