President Bill Clinton and his Republican challenger Bob Dole came out in a tie in a mock election held at the county high school last Wednesday.
All students and staff were eligible to vote, but the turnout was poor. Only 187, or about 45 percent of those eligible bothered to vote. The student percentage was 42 percent voting. For the staff 73 percent voted. Polls were open from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. with U.S. Government students manning the polls.
Clinton and Dole each got 80 votes. Ross Perot got 18 votes. Libertarian Harry Browne got three votes. Natural Law party nominee John Hagelin got one vote.
In the U.S. Senate race, incumbent John Warner defeated his Democratic Party challenger Mark Warner 89 to 82. The race for the House of Representatives was a runaway with incumbent Frank Wolf getting 125 votes to 34 for Bob Weinberg and eight for Libertarian Party nominee Gary Reams.
