With little discussion the Washington Town Council voted to amend the Zoning Ordinance to allow "adaptive use of existing structures for public or quasi-public community services" with a special use permit.
This clears the way for the senior nutrition site to be moved into the former Washington School, although the council was prepared to allow the move before the amendment was adopted.
The town Planning Commission considered an amendment that would have also allowed adaptive reuse for "retail shops, arts and craft galleries, offices restaurants, inns, bed and breakfast, theaters and multi-family uses," but decided to restrict the amendment to public and "quasi-public" uses. The more permissive amendment was modeled after uses allowed in the county's Zoning Ordinance.
The Town Council then voted unanimously to go along with the Planning Commission's recommendation.
Such uses are allowed when the present or "historical use, is impractical due to the structure's size, construction, or location." The amended ordinance forbids any "major addition" to the structure and requires that "the exterior appearance of the structure shall be substantially maintained.”
The council also voted to add seven more street lights, particularly along the entrances to town from the Fodderstack Road, Warren Avenue and Piedmont Avenue.
